The South Korean striker Tottenham is supposed to compensate for the absence of Kane, injured. The 25-year-old hopes not to receive his military marching order.
For Son Heung-Min, the story seems to be only an eternal beginning. In the fall of 2016, when Harry Kane had injured his ankle, the Spurs were counting on him to shake the nets. But the London club was living in fear that his South Korean striker would be recalled to the country to fulfill his military obligations.
Rebelote this winter. Kane is injured again (still on the ankle) and still in shape (he scored twice on Sunday against Bournemouth). And the fear of the marching order has not disappeared. Every South Korean citizen must undergo a period of 21 months of service before the age of 28. Now, time passes: Son Heung-Min has today 25. Will the army break his career?
There is, however, a way to escape military service: Olympians and Asian medalists are exempt. The South Korean team's participation in the Asian Games this summer could allow the player to permanently get rid of the military threat.
He owes 21 months of military service to the army.
The Daily Telegraph recalls that South Korean men are required by law to perform at least 21 months of military service before the age of 28. The deadline is getting closer slowly but surely for Son, who turned 24 last July.
However, there are exceptions for athletes. Those who win Olympic medals or gold medals during the Asian Games can be exempted and have only four weeks of basic training in the army. But Son Heug-min toasted a joker this summer.
Another chance to avoid it
Indeed, the Spurs player participated in the Rio Olympics with the selection of South Korea. The Asian Tigers had a lot of hopes in Brazil, but after a brilliant group phase, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Honduras, missing out on any chance of a medal.
